How to buy a good watermelon :  Look the watermelon over. You are looking for a firm, symmetrical watermelon that is free from bruises, cuts or dents.   Lift it up. The watermelon should be heavy for its size. Watermelon is 92 percent water, most of the weight is water. Turn it over. The underside of the watermelon should have a creamy yellow spot from where it sat on the ground and ripened in the sun.

L.A. Times - Food & Dining: How to make sense of the wine list

Those wine lists at restaurants can be confusing. Here's how to cut through the clutter and choose a great wine.

Give me a wine list, I know what to do. But confronted with a list of unfamiliar craft beers, whether I ask for advice or just randomly pick for myself, too often I end up with something too fruity or too hoppy or over-the-top. That's because, in terms of beer, I'm a novice, unfamiliar even with the vocabulary used to describe the brews and unable to convincingly convey what it is I do like.

Chef Suzanne Goin's menu is still recognizable and delicious, whether you order meat dishes or just vegetables. But the larger space and big platters are a break from the past.

When the first AOC opened a decade ago, nobody quite knew what to make of the place, a wine bar near the original Farmers Market that seemed to specialize in cured meats, salads and lots of tiny dishes that reflected the flavors of coastal Italy and Provence, but also Spain and North Africa. We were younger then, and as much as we respected chef Suzanne Goin, who was moonlighting from her restaurant Lucques, neither harissa nor the herby marinade chermoula were quite in our vocabularies yet.

Forget the mediocre early choices. Prime varieties are sweet and flavorful, and extend beyond even the Blenheim.

After a month of mediocre early-season apricots, the prime varieties, sweet, juicy and flavorful, are here or will be soon. Beyond the celebrated Blenheim, there are other worthwhile varieties, and a few are even better. Here are the leading apricots and apricot-like hybrids, in order of ripening, rated on a scale of 1 to 10 for flavor. The crop is about a week early this year and looks good in size and quality.

Jun 1st 2013, 07:00

Providence chef Michael Cimarusti details how to boil lobster, grill lobster — and make lobster rolls for an authentic Rhode Island treat.

I ate my share of lobsters while spending summers in Rhode Island. My family still talks about the 10-pounder we bought from a shop in Galilee. We spent an hour scouring the neighborhood looking for someone who owned a pot big enough to cook it. Lobster is still one of my favorite foods of summer — that's when it is the cheapest, when they move closer to shore and the fishing conditions are better.

Teavana has recalled about 445,000 glass tea tumblers sold in the U.S. (24,850 in Canada) because of laceration and burn hazards.  The tumblers can break or shatter unexpectedly, posing laceration and burn hazards. Consumers should immediately stop using the glass tea tumblers and return them to a Teavana store location (except for three stores; Columbia Mall, Columbia, Maryland; Dallas Fort Worth Airport, Arlington, Texas; or Galleria Mall, Fort Lauderdale) for a free replacement metallic tea tumbler and a complimentary 2 ounce package of Opus Rouge Rooibos Tea. Consumers returning tumblers or glasses sold as part of sets will receive a replacement tumbler and package of tea for each tumbler or glass in that set. Consumers may also mail the tumblers or glasses to Teavana by calling the company and requesting a paid mailer that will be sent at no cost to the consumer for returning the recalled tumblers or glasses. A free replacement metallic tumbler plus the complimentary tea will be sent at no charge upon receipt of the returned tumblers or glasses.
